Artist Peter Hoff is a true native of Kennebunkport, Maine. His family has lived in “the Port” for five generations. For thirty-six years Peter taught at Kennebunkport’s Consolidated Elementary School.
As Peter began to plan for retirement he decided to teach himself to paint with watercolors. Armed with a “how-to” book and a set of paints he sat down at the kitchen table. And so it began…
In the spring of 2001, Peter joined the Art Guild of the Kennebunk’s and entered his first juried show. His painting, “Home Improvement” won Best in Show. In subsequent Art Guild shows he has been awarded three First Place prized for water-media and a Judge’s prize. In the spring of 2001, his painting “House Call,” was accepted into the New England Watercolor Society’s North American Show which hung in Concord, Massachusetts. He was also awarded an honorable mention at the Kennebunk River Club’s Art Show in 2002. “Shaker Doorway” was included in the Concord Art Association’s March Show. His work is now in private collections from Maine to Florida and he has won other awards.
Mr. Hoff has traveled extensively in the United States and briefly in England and Scotland. Each trip “away” leaves him thankful he is lucky enough to have such a beautiful hometown to which he can return. Peter is appreciative of the simple lines in nature and architecture. When asked, he will tell you that he wants to “capture the play of light on interesting objects.” It is in his choice of those objects that Hoff shows us what we might otherwise overlook.
Peter feels that as he changes occupations, he is exchanging one art for another and the classroom for a larger audience.
